The Boxcar Traveler Synopsis
The Boxcar Traveler is set in depression era America. It follows the travels of the main character, Harry Donegan. Harry loses his father to a violent murder as a young lad. This loss, influences Harry’s eventual career path, and he winds up as a very successful stockbroker. That is, until the Great Depression hits.
After losing everything, including his beautiful bride, mansion, cars and other worldly possessions, Harry sets off with a few friends, on a trip to Chicago, where great jobs are rumored to be had. Failing miserably in this search for employment, Harry has a chance encounter with an old man named Bob. Bob, a weathered, but wise fellow, had reached a low point in his own life, many years previously. Bob decided to “turn to the rails”, that is, traveling America by boxcar, no strings attached.
It’s not really the travel that Harry finds so alluring, but rather the freedom that this new way of life appears to have. To hop on an empty railroad car and watch the sun rise, to travel through amber fields of beauty, and watching the most glorious of sunsets. Harry decides to follow in the footsteps of his new friend, a Boxcar Traveler.
Harry experiences sadness, desperation, fear and hope, as he rides the rails, and sees how the world works, and others live in depression era America. He meets many new people, some very kind, some pure evil and others, with good hearts that may just need something good in their lives, to get their world jump started again.
This is book of extremes, of travel, excitement, fear and uncertainty. Love and lust come into play, as Harry meets a cross section of Americana. His positive spirit and good heart leads him into temptation, danger and ultimately, love.
You will find the characters so real, that you will be rooting for them, to find their path to true happiness. Watch, as evil wins at times, but goodness ultimately takes its rightful place. Live vicariously through this man, who still possess’ a little boy’s heart. Come take a ride on the rails, with The Boxcar Traveler.
